When Running 135 Miles In Death Valley Just Isn’t Enough

Why is this guy smiling?

Is it really that much fun to run  the 135 mile Badwater Ultra-marathon in Death Valley California?  Well, if you are Charlie Engle, it really is. “Hey, I thought I was supposed to be hurting out here.  That just isn’t working out, so I have an idea - let’s enter the Furnace Creek 508 mile bike race too!”

Just kidding!  Actually Badwater did hurt, but not enough to keep him from his current Mission.  Charlie  has his sights set on winning the Death Valley Cup, which is given to those who are able to complete  both the Badwater Ultramarathon AND the Furnace Creek 508 in the same year!  To top that off, not only is Charlie shooting for the Cup, but he is shooting for the record as well.  No surprise.

To break the record, which has been held since 2000, Charlie will have to cover the 508 mile distance is just over 32 hours!  The race begins in Santa Clarita on Saturday October, 6 at 7:00am.

Gaining 35,000 feet in elevation, the race officially ends on Monday October 8 at 7:00am.
